In the cottage we have listed grocery stores in the area with their opening times, but many of our guests pre-arrange their grocery shopping to be delivered to the cottage after their arrival. All of the main supermarkets deliver to our address, including Ocado, Sainsburys, Tesco and Asda.
However, during your stay, when you want to do a food shop, we recommend sampling some of the local produce and these can be found in a number of excellent independent shops in Camber or Rye or slightly further afield.
In Rye High Street you will find Rye Deli which sells a range of produce from pies to cheese and much more besides.
In nearby Winchelsea why not pop along and have a browse at what's available in Winchelsea Farm Kitchen - a butcher, gourmet delicatessen and village stores
About half way between our cottage and Rye [total distance 3 miles] you will find Salts Farm Shop a lovely shop selling an array of produce including fresh fruit and veg, local cheeses, bread, local meats and local wine, cider and beer.
Carry on towards Rye and as you come to the bridge have a little stop the other side of it and look at the wonderful selection of very fresh locally caught fish in Rye Bay Fish shop
Of course, you might be staying in the autumn or winter and feel in need of a nice warming drink, well, apart from mulled wine, why not visit Knoops in Rye? It is quite unique in as much as the hot chocolate is made from real chocolate, not powder. You choose your preferred chocolate - milk, plain or white, you choose your strength by the percentage and you can even add a flavouring too out of a wide choice of fabulous flavours.
In our welcome basket, you will find a bottle of single variety local apple juice. This is from Ringden Farm in Sussex, where you can buy an array of single variety apple juices from Bramley, Discovery, Golden Delicious, Cox, Worcester and many more.Their flavours vary and can be bought depending on your preference for sweetness or dryness. The farm is close to Bodiam castle, so if you are visitong the castle, why not pop along to Ringden Farm for some more local apple juice,
If you don't fancy cooking or eating out, then there is a selection of menus in the cottage information folder for meal deliveries
For fish and chips, we would actually recommend taking an extra few minutes and driving into Rye where the best fish and chips in the immediate area can be found at Marino's fish and chip shop in The Mint, in Rye [The Mint is at the very bottom of the High Street or from the other direction is the road to the left of Mermaid Street as you look up mermaid Street] There is a small restaurant, but if you want to take them back to the cottage, we have their menu in the folder, so why not phone them up and place your order and tell them what time you will be there? That's what we do!
If eating out, in Camber itself we have some restaurants in walking distance. The two nearest are The Green Owl pub/restaurant and The Beach Bistro at The Gallivant. The latter has a handy shortcut for our guests to use and also offers them a 10% discount. At a level 3 minute walk away using the shortcut you don't have far to go, and as it is right opposite the sand dunes, is ideally placed for a pre-dinner walk on the beach too.
If eating in Rye you are literally spoilt for choice with an array of restaurants from Italian, Indian, seafood, steak,Thai, and many others. The local ancient inns also serve some fabulous food and we recommend them all! Our most recent new try was The Globe Inn Marsh which we can personally recommend, but we also thoroughly enjoy eating everywhere else we have tried so far! You will find a few sample menus in the cottage, but most places have their own websites and you might like to look at Simply Italian, Webbes The Fish Cafe , The Ship Inn Rye and The Standard Inn in Rye. There are many, many more - too many to mention, but we are sure you will soon find your way around during your stay!
For our guests who are bringing their dog, and many of our guests do, we have listed dog friendly places to eat and drink in Camber, Rye, and within a 6 mile radius of our cottage.
Also in our welcome basket you will find a variety of freshly baked goods, all made to order for us by a family in the village, Homemade in Camber. Should you want any more of their goodies, or to take some home, you can contact them and they will make some more of their lovely produce for you. They do need 48 hours notice, and their contact details are on the packs of produce. They will also make special occasion cakes if you wanted a birthday cake during your stay.
For tea rooms, Rye has a number of excellent places for a morning coffee, light lunch or afternoon tea. I think we have sampled them all now and would thoroughly recommend [in no particular order] Haydens , The Apothecary, Old Grain Store, Fletchers House ,Mermaid Street Cafe [great ice creams there too!] and Cobbles Tea Rooms. If you are staying a week you can try a different one each day!
