When you are on holiday, who doesn't want to sample the local delicacies? In our area of East Sussex we are lucky enough to have some wonderful local produce, not least the very fresh local fish, Sussex wild boar, and saltmarsh lamb. This lamb is sweeter than normal lamb, contrary to what most people think. The most celebrated of the local seafood is the scallop. Rye Bay produces some of the very best scallops, and they are at their best during February. This is when one of the two local annual food festivals is held - The Rye Bay Scallop Week - when local restaurants offer a variety of scallop dishes to tempt your taste buds. There are also demonstrations and fun events during the course of this very popular week. The second annual food week is held during the autumn and is Wild Boar Week. Sussex still has wild boar and during this week local restaurants offer this dish cooked in a variety of ways. The week isn't just about boar though, it includes pheasant, venison, rabbit and other game - medieval food, served in a medieval town.
During your stay, when you want to do a food shop, we recommend sampling some of the local produce and these can be found in a number of excellent independent shops in Camber or Rye or slightly further afield.
Just off of Rye High Street you will find Rye Deli which sells a range of produce from pies to cheese and much more besides.
About half way between our cottage and Rye [total distance 3 miles] you will find Salts Farm Shop a lovely shop selling an array of produce including fresh fruit and veg, local cheeses, bread, local meats and local wine, cider and beer.
Carry on towards Rye and as you come to the bridge have a little stop the other side of it and look at the wonderful selection of very fresh locally caught fish in Rye Bay Fish shop

If eating out, in Camber itself we have some restaurants and a good pub in walking distance. The nearest is The Owl pub/restaurant This is about a 10 minute flat walk. Please check their website first as they are temporarily not accepting children under 5 years.
If eating in Rye you are literally spoilt for choice with an array of restaurants from Italian, Indian, seafood, steak,Thai, and many others. The local ancient inns also serve some fabulous food and we recommend them all! Our most recent new try was The Globe Inn Marsh which we can personally recommend, but we also thoroughly enjoy eating everywhere else we have tried so far! You will find a few sample menus in the cottage, but most places have their own websites and you might like to look at Simply Italian, Webbes The Fish Cafe , The Ship Inn Rye and The Standard Inn or Ypres Castle Inn in Rye.
For tea rooms, Rye has a number of excellent places for a morning coffee, light lunch or afternoon tea. I think we have sampled them all now and would thoroughly recommend [in no particular order] The Apothecary, Old Grain Store,Mermaid Street Cafe [great ice creams there too!] The Fig,and Cobbles Tea Rooms, which is tucked away behind The Mermaid Inn. If you are staying a week you can try a different one each day!
