Rye, East Sussex
We are very lucky that not only do we have one of the UK's finest beaches on our doorstep, but also the chocolate box pretty, medieval town of Rye just 3 miles across the marsh. Many of our guests enjoy walking or cycling into Rye during the day time as there are off road cycle paths into Rye and it also makes a pleasant walk using the off road cycle/walking tracks.
Rye is like stepping back in time. With a maze of cobbled streets lined with ancient buildings dating back several centuries, you can't but help be overwhelmed with this charming little hill top town. The ancient church of St Marys can be seen for miles as you approach the town, standing proudly in the centre of this historic hill top town, it is Rye's oldest building.
Rye has an array of restaurants, ancient inns and good tea rooms, as well as many places of interest to visit, from the museum, Ypres Tower, walking the ancient cobbled streets, visiting the heritage centre [a good place to start, especially if it's your first visit to Rye] or browsing its many independent shops. It also now has a two screen, independent cinema,Kino, located in a converted Victorian school building, in the heart of the Citadel.
The heritage centre also periodically offers guided ghost walks of Rye.
Like Camber Sands, Rye is also popular with film crews. It was last seen on TV over Christmas 2014 when it became Tilling, for the latest series of Mapp and Lucia which was written in Rye by E.F. Benson who lived in Rye. It was also transformed into a European town for the filming of The Monuments Men. In January 2019, the High Street was transformed for filming an episode of The Crown with Helena Bonham Carter.
Rye and Camber Sands are the perfect neighbours. Both are amongst the finest the UK has to offer. For a more in depth guide to Rye, please visit our blog, A Brief Guide to Rye
