Walk or cycle into Rye
From Marsh View Cottage, head back towards the main road and turn right. Walk past The Gallivant and continue walking out of the village towards Rye Golf Club. You can pick up the National Cycle Network Route 2 once out of the village and carry on walking/cycling along side the marsh on your right. Continue on until you see the sign below [photo on left]. Cross over the road here and ahead of you will be another sign [centre photo below] Follow this sign which takes you across fields. Dogs on a lead are allowed as there are usually sheep in the fields
Continue across the field where you will catch your first glimpse of Rye [above right] Keep walking until you reach a gate by the bridge across the Rover Rother. Go through the gate [please remember to close it behind you again] and turn left crossing the bridges pedestrian path. Just before you cross the bridge, you may want to enjoy the view of Rye from this vantage point [see photo below]
Ahead of you is Rye Bay Fish [great local and fresh fish you might want to purchase on your way back!] Just by the fishmongers is a pathway across the park. Follow the path and walk/cycle towards another path heading right that is just before the bowling green. At the end of this path you are back on the road and in front of you is a pedestrian crossing. Cross the road here and take the very steep path that will be just to your right. At the top of the path you will see to your right, Landgate, one of the original gates into the town. Immediately on your right is Knoops, an amazing little place that sells the most fantastic hot chocolate. You choose the strength of chocolate and can add some great flavours if you want as well. To your left, heads into Rye High Street. The High Street is full of some lovely places to stop and get something to eat and a sit down. The vast majority of Rye's shops are independent with only 3 small 'chain' shops. It is worth a walk along the High Street to do a spot of shopping from the variety of independent shops on offer.
If you want to head straight into the oldest part of Rye, the citadel, then take a turning on the left of the High Street. We would suggest turning up Lion Street, which is next to The George Inn. Ahead of you, you will see St. Marys Church. It is worth popping in and taking the chance to view Rye from high up on the roof of the church. Some parts of the route up are very narrow, but it is worth it for the reward of the view across Rye. From the church, you are close to Church Square, Ypres Tower, Watchbell Street, Mermaid Street etc. If you have a map that we leave in the cottage, you will be able to find your way around the citadel with ease.
