The unspoilt medieval town of Rye
Just 3 miles away from Marsh View Cottage is the pretty, medieval hill top town of Rye with its cobbled streets and ancient buildings.
Rye has a turbulent history. One of the Cinque Ports, much of it was destroyed by fire by French invaders in 1377. Pictured right is The Mermaid Inn in Mermaid Street which was rebuilt in 1420 following its destruction. The cellars however are thought to be much older.
Rye was once also the UK capital of smuggling. One of the most notorious gangs - The Hawkhurst Gang would sit in The Mermaid Inn with their loaded pistols on the table in front of them. No one dared challenge them and they terrified the locality for some considerable time. The marshes surrounding Marsh View Cottage were used by the smugglers to bring their loot to Rye and some of the churches on the marsh were also used to hide their goods. Some of the churches - and indeed some of the buildings in Rye - had underground passages so that the smugglers could move unseen between buildings.
These days Rye is much friendlier, but largely unspoilt. You will find less than a handful of the usual high street stores here - with independent shops and antique shops being prevalent.A good place to start when you visit for the first time is Rye Heritage Centre
With a good choice of ancient inns serving good food, restaurants serving anything from seafood, such as Webbes Fish Cafe to Italian and everything in between, as well as a selection of quaint tea rooms there is no shortage of choice of places to eat in Rye.
In Marsh View Cottage you will find a wealth of tourist information leaflets covering Sussex and Kent to assist you in choosing which attractions to visit.
Our self catering seaside holiday cottage in Camber, Rye, East Sussex is also close to the borders with Kent - The Garden of England, making us an ideal base for exploring both counties. Contact us
